After a 25-season run, the animated series 'Arthur' was cancelled

According to one of the show's original creators, Arthur the A-A-R-D-V-A-R-K has been C-A-N-C-E-L-L-E-D.

The long-running children's show's final season will premiere in 2022, according to show creator Kathy Waugh on the Finding DW podcast.

Waugh informed the Arthur-centric podcast that the programme wrapped two years ago and is no longer in production.

“I believe (PBS) made a mistake, and I believe Arthur should return, and I know I'm not alone in believing they made a mistake,” Waugh said. “I'm not sure if it was a ratings issue or if it felt like it was time to retire.”

The educational TV show follows Arthur the aardvark, his young sister DW, and their pals in a series based on Marc Brown's bestselling novels from 1976.

The programme was the longest-running animated children's series in history. It peaked in the 1990s and is still popular among nostalgic millennials, who have recycled it into a variety of memes in recent years.

“The generation that is presently posting these things grew up with the programme, and a lot of the issues that the show handled were sort of broader life lessons, bigger concerns that people still deal with throughout their lives,” Adam Downer, an assistant editor at Know Your Meme, told US last year.

“Arthur is one of those foundational learning shows that everyone saw when they were kids and remembers.”

Fans used the "Arthur fist" meme to convey their outrage over the show's termination this week.
